Alumni Stories: Ken Austin, The First Benny Beaver
Transcription
I'm Ken Austin, Oregon State's first Benny Beaver back in 1952 and I just had a wonderful time learning how to act in front of crowds and entertain the crowds and I'm just proud the history still goes on. In the Spring of 1952 right over here in Gill Coliseum, we met at the athletic director's office, a bunch of us turned out for the rally squad. My fraternity brother's going to do it and I thought it would be fun to do it with him. He won the selection and on the way back to the fraternity house said "you know why I won?" And I said "No". He said "Because I proposed that we have a student mascot and I'd like for you to be a student mascot" and I said "What the heck is a student mascot?" And that picture that we held up this afternoon, that's Bill Sundstrom standing in the background and he was the one who had the proposal for a student mascot. I bought a costume head at a costume shop, decorated it with shag rug, made the tail out of a big piece of sponge rubber, wore a football pants and a football jersey, I think it was a football jersey. In high school, I was Kenny Austin and I think after a few beers with BIll, I might have said "you know, why don't we call him Benny because I was called Kenny?" But, who knows? The school's done wonderful things for me, I have no idea what my life would be like if I hadn't been Benny Beaver. It gave me self confidence, but I'm awfully proud of my school. I love you Benny.}
