>>> OKAY, FIRE FLY, ROLL CAMERA. THIS IS V-LOG ENTRY 184 AT IN ADDITION MISSION ELAPSED TIME. IN THREE, TWO, ONE. GREETINGS TO EVERYONE BACK ON EARTH, MARS, AND LUNAR BASE ALDRIN. WE'RE 30 DAYS OUT FROM OUR PRIMARY OBJECTIVE, SATURN'S ICY MOON AND THE VIEW IS -- WELL, THE VIEW IS INCREDIBLE. TAKE A LOOK. I'LL BE HONEST WITH YOU. IT WAS A LONG 712 DAYS AGO WHEN OUR CREW BEGAN THIS VOYAGE TO ANOTHER WORLD. WE FIRST TOOK SPACE ELEVATOR ASMA UP PAST THE MOON TO OUR SHIP, SATURN 1. FROM THERE, WE LEFT ON A TWO-YEAR JOURNEY TO WHAT I THINK IS THE COOLEST PLANET IN OUR SOLAR SYSTEM. 152 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH, RUSSIAN YURI BECAME THE FIRST HUMAN TO ORBIT THE EARTH, FOLLOWED SOON BY AMERICA'S MERCURY ASTRONAUTS IN THE EARLY 1960s. ARMSTRONG, ALDRIN, AND TEN OTHERS STEPPED ON TO THE LUNAR SURFACE. SINCE THOSE EARLY DAYS, SPACE TRAVEL HAS BECOME TRULY INTERNATIONAL, BEGINNING WITH THE SPACE SHUTTLE PROGRAM IN THE 1980s. FOR NEARLY FOUR DECADES, THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION WAS OCCUPIED BY CREWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. IN THE 2020s, WE AGAIN VENTURED BEYOND LOW EARTH ORBIT, FIRST BACK TO THE MOON THEN TO MARS. WE CONTINUED TO SEND BOTH ROBOTIC AND CREWED FLIGHTS, EVEN FARTHER INTO OUR SOLAR SYSTEM. ♪♪ AS WE WAIT FOR THE DOWN LINK FROM THE CELEDUS, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE GRAVITY ASSIST SLINGSHOT THAT BOOSTED CURRENT 1'S SPEED ON ITS JUPITER FLY BY. BY THE TIME YOU SEE THIS, THE CREW OF THE SATURN 1 LANDER WILL BE MAKING THEIR FINAL DESCENT TO THE SURFACE. THIS IS IT. WHAT WILL WE FIND WHEN THE CREW LANDS? WHAT WE DO KNOW IS THAT FROM THE CREW'S FIRST STEPS ON TO THE SURFACE WILL COME SPECTACULAR IMAGES, UNEXPECTED ANSWERS, AND INFINITE QUESTIONS SPARKED BY THE UNQUENCHABLE HUMAN THIRST TO EXPLORE. >>> LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, PLEASE WELCOME THE CHAIRMAN OF THE RNASA FOUNDATION, MR. IN THAT SPACE, WE SAW THE COLOSSAL PLANETS AND MOONS OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM. THE DAZZLING PALETTES OF NEBULA AND DISTANT GALAXIES AND THE DARKNESS OF THE UNKNOWN. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, WE SAW POTENTIAL. TO FURTHER OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE EFFECTS OF LONG DURATION SPACE FLIGHT ON THE HUMAN BODY, ASTRONAUT SCOTT KELLY AND COSMONAU T MIKAIL SPENT TIME ON THE SPACE STATION. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, PLEASE WELCOME YOUR MASTER OF CEREMONIES, MR. MILES O'BRIEN. >> HELLO, HOUSTON. IT IS GOOD TO BE BACK AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. YOU AREN'T SICK OF ME YET, HUH? ONE OF US NEEDS TO GET A NEW AGENT, BECAUSE HERE I AM ON MY NINTH AND RECORD-SETTING MC FOR THIS EVENT. I GUESS YOU COULD CALL ME -- THANK YOU. THANK YOU. I AM THE -- I'M THE PEGGY WITSON OF MCs HERE. I'VE BEEN DOING THIS EVENT SINCE WE BEGAN AT THE WAFFLE HOUSE IN WEBSTER AS YOU MAY RECALL. IT'S BEEN SO LONG, IT'S ONE ARM AGO FOR ME. TOO SOON? IS IT STILL TOO SOON FOR THAT? ACTUALLY, WHEN I STARTED DOING THIS, BILL SHEPARD WAS STILL LEARNING HOW TO KILL A MAN WITH HIS BARE HANDS 16 DIFFERENT WAYS. LELAND MELVIN WAS NURSING A TENDER HAMSTRING WHILE HE WAS TRYING OUT FOR THE COWBOYS. SCOTT WAS SHOPPING FOR A SURGEON, SEEKING A HEIGHT REDUCTION SO HE COULD SQUEEZE INTO A SOYU SEAT. WENDY LAWRENCE WAS TRYING TO STRUGGLE IN A DOCTORED TAPE MEASURER SO HE COULD FIT IN. SHE NEEDED AN EXTRA HALF INCH. IN THOSE DAYS, WOODPECKERS SEEMED TO LOVE THE SPACE SHUTTLE AS MUCH AS ALL OF US IN THE ROOM. STEVE HOLLY HAD TO SHOW UP WITH A BAG OVER HIS HEAD FOR FEAR THAT HIS EPIC LAUNCH SCRUB HEX WOULD CONTINUE. UP IN SPACE, THE SPACE STATION MIR WAS TUMBLING, BURNING, LEAKING AND BRIMMING WITH JUNK AS WELL AS CO2 AND I WAS GRILLING POOR FRANK CULLERSON ON A DAILY BASIS ON CNN. HE STILL HAS SCARS AND A TWITCH OVER THE WHOLE THING. NOREN WAS UP THERE ON AN INVOLUNTARY HUNGER STRIKE WHILE HE WAITED FOR HIS SPICY SHRIMP COCKTAIL. IT WAS SAID AT THE TIME THAT A SHUTTLE WOULD ONLY BE CLEARED TO LAUNCH WHEN THE STACK OF PAPER EQUALLED OR SURPASSED THE HEIGHT OF THE STACK ITSELF DOCUMENTING THE MILLION STEPS IN THE SHUTTLE FLOW. IN FACT, I KNOW THIS FOR A FACT, THE ONLY STACK BIGGER SAT ON ROB NAVIAS'S CONSOLE IN MISSION CONTROL. SOME THINGS DON'T CHANGE. IN THOSE DAYS, JOHN GRUNSFELD WAS IN RUSSIA THINKING ABOUT FLYING TO THE STATION. WHEN HE CAME HOME TO HOUSTON, HE PACKED EMPTY CANS AND BOTTLES IN HIS SUITCASES SO HE COULD RECYCLE THEM. THAT'S NOT A JOKE. THAT'S TRUE. ANYWAY, GRUNSFELD EVENTUALLY SAID NYET TO RUSSIAN, OR MAYBE IT WAS THE OTHER WAY AROUND, AND THE REST IS HISTORY. HE CAME BACK TO BECOME THE WORLD FAMOUS HUBBLE REPAIRMAN. SO, WHAT NEXT, COLUMBUS? HOW DO YOU WRITE A NEW CHAPTER AFTER THAT ONE? JOHN HAS BEEN TIRELESSLY DRIVING HIS PRIUS AROUND THE COUNTRY WELL BELOW THE SPEED LIMIT SO THE ENGINE NEVER KICKS IN, TRYING TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION. IT'S A LONG WAY FROM THE CORVETTE DAYS OF "THE RIGHT STUFF," RIGHT? HE THOUGHT ABOUT THAT DAY WHEN HE WAS AT THE WHITE HOUSE AND PRESIDENT OBAMA TOLD THE CROWD NOT TO CONFUSE HIM WITH THE MAYTAG REPAIRMAN. NOW, JOHN MISUNDERSTOOD THAT. HE THOUGHT THAT WAS AN ORDER FROM THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF. HE TRIED IT FOR A WHILE, BUT THE PROBLEM WAS HE GOT FIRED BECAUSE HE INSISTED ON REPAIRING THE APPLIANCES IN A SWIMMING POOL UNDER WATER. DIDN'T GO WELL. SO, HE MOVED ON TO BEING AN AUTO MECHANIC. HE TRIED HIS HANDS AT THAT BUT HE KEPT WORKING ON ENGINES THAT WORKED REALLY WELL, FULL BLAST, FOR 8 AND A HALF MINUTES, AND THEN THEY'D SHUT OFF. PEOPLE APPARENTLY DID NOT LIKE THE MEKO FEATURE WHEN HE WAS TRYING TO PATENT. SO HE REMEMBERED HOW MUCH HE ENJOYED THE VIEW ON HIS WORK SITE IN ORBIT. HE TOOK A JOB WASHING WINDOWS AT TRUMP TOWER IN MIDTOWN MANHATTAN. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'VE HEARD, BUT IT'S HUGE. AFTER THE ELECTION, UNFORTUNATELY, HE WAS FORCED TO TENDER HIS RESIGNATION, HAVING BEEN AT THE OBAMA WHITE HOUSE AT ALL. SAD. VERY SAD. SO, HE HAD ANOTHER IDEA. GET A LITTLE CLOSER TO HIS ASTROPHYSICS ROOTS, HE WENT TO A HOBBY SHOP AND TRIED HIS JOB -- TRIED HIS HAND AT SELLING CELESTRON TELESCOPES BUT THAT DIDN'T WORK OUT EITHER BECAUSE HE KEPT TRYING TO CONVINCE PEOPLE LIKE THAT TO BUY A PACKAGE OF HOME SERVICING MISSIONS AND PEOPLE GOT A LITTLE CREEPED OUT BY IT. ALL OF THIS LED HIM TO THE BRINK OF DESPAIR AND ULTIMATELY A DESPERATION MOVE. MY SOURCES AT THE GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER SENT ME THESE SECURITY CAMERA IMAGES AT THE JAMES WEBB TELESCOPE. THE STOW AWAY TEAM WAS FOILED, FORTUNATELY. THE JUDGE SENTENCED HIM TO LIFE SENTENCE OF HARD TIME IN 1 G, FORCING HIM TO ABIDE BY NEWTON'S LAWS HERE FORTH. OF COURSE THE TRUTH IS, THE HONEST TO GOODNESS TRUTH IS JOHN IS A NATIONAL TREASURE WHO HELPED MAKE THIS COUNTRY GREAT LONG BEFORE THAT WAS A CAMPAIGN SLOGAN, AND WE THANK HIM FOR THAT, AND I AM PROUD THAT I GOT GIVE HIM ONE OF MANY ROUNDS OF APPLAUSE WE GIVE HIM TONIGHT FOR HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS. AND NOW TONIGHT, WE HONOR JOHN AS WELL AS MANY INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE MADE OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR SPACE PROGRAM. OUR STELLAR AWARDS GO TO 25 INDIVIDUALS IN SEVEN TEAMS, ALL THE STELLAR NOMINEES ARE LISTED IN YOUR PROGRAM. IF YOU SEE THEM, CONGRATULATE THEM. I DO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT JOHN GRUNSFELD IS THE 31st WINNER OF THE SPACE TROPHY. OUR SPACE COMMUNICATOR AWARD EE IS ONLY THE 11th RECIPIENT. SO I ASK YOU, WHICH AWARD IS MORE PRESTIGIOUS? JUST THROWING THAT OUT THERE. THE IDEA WAS HATCHED BY A MAN WHO YOU'RE ABOUT TO HEAR FROM. HIS DAD AND HIS SKY LAB CREW MATES ONCE HELD THE ENDURANCE RECORD THAT PEGGY WITSON JUST GRABBED. FOR THEM, IT WAS 81 DAYS BUT THEIR DRIED POOP, STILL STORED IN HOUSTON NEAR THE MOON ROCKS HAS SET SOME OTHER KIND OF RECORD. I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS, BUT IT'S STILL THERE. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, A GREAT SPACE COMMUNICATOR HIMSELF, JEFF CARR. ♪♪ >> SO, THANKS, MILES, I THINK. I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW PLEASED I AM THAT CHRIS HADFIELD COULDN'T BE HERE TONIGHT. I LIKE CHRIS, BUT OTHERWISE, I WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE HONOR OF INTRODUCING THE SPACE COMMUNICATOR WINNER THIS EVENING. WHERE'S FLOYD? FLOYD, BACK IN 1996, AND '97, WHEN WE WERE FIRST CONTEMPLATING THIS AWARD, IN MEMORY OF STEVEN GILVAIN, THE PERSON THAT WE'RE HONORING TONIGHT CROSSED MY MIND SEVERAL TIMES AS WE WERE WORKING THROUGH THE QUALIFICATIONS AND THE QUALITIES OF CANDIDATES FOR THIS HIGH LEVEL OF RECOGNITION. AND I REALLY, TRULY HOPED THAT MANY OF YOU WHO HAVE, YOU KNOW, BEEN A VETERAN ATTENDEES OF THIS EVENT HAVE APPRECIATED THE QUALITY OF WINNERS THAT WE HAVE BROUGHT TO THIS PROGRAM OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS, INCLUDING HOUSEHOLD NAMES LIKE MILES O'BRIEN, LIKE NEIL DeGRASSE TYSON, BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY. WE'VE ALSO RECOGNIZED LEADERS AND INNOVATORS FROM NASA AND INDUSTRY LIKE ELLIOT PULLHAN AND VERONICA McGREGOR, MEDIA STANDOUTS AND OF COURSE OUR ASTRONAUT POST HIMSELF, CHRIS HADFIELD, WHO WON THIS AWARD TWO YEARS AGO AND NOMINATED OUR WINNER THIS EVENING. TONIGHT'S HONOREE, ROB NAVIAS, FITS THIS AWARD TO A TEE. THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER AS A JOURNALIST AND AS A PROFESSIONAL SPOKESPERSON, ROB HAS FOUND HIMSELF IN FRONT ROW SEATS TO SOME OF THE MOST DRAMATIC, IMPACTFUL STORIES OF OUR TIMES. AND FROM HIS BEGINNING AS A CUB REPORTER, HE RECOGNIZED AND READILY ACCEPTED THE RESPONSIBILITY TO CONNECT OTHERS WITH THESE KEY MOMENTS IN TIME, ACCURATELY, HONESTLY, AND WITH INTEGRITY. AND OVER THE YEARS, ROB HAS DEVELOPED A RICH TALENT FOR TELLING A STORY AND VERY COMPELLING BUT CONCISE TERMS AND I THINK THAT'S REALLY ROB'S CALLING CARD, HIS TRADEMARK. YOU KNOW, WHEN I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HIRE ROB BACK IN, WAS IT '93? YEAH. WE WERE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE THE STORY TELLING QUALITY OF COMMENTARY. AND OTHER WAYS TO BETTER CONNECT WITH THE PUBLIC. THINGS LIKE BROADCAST INNOVATIONS WITH NASA TELEVISION, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, AND WE REALLY, REALLY NEEDED TO SHAKE THINGS UP. WE REALLY NEEDED TO SET THE BAR HIGHER, AND ROB WAS THE GUY. ROB WAS THE GUY WE NEEDED. AND HE WAS -- HE WAS INTERESTED AND, YOU KNOW, WE TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO BRING HIM ON BOARD. I HAVE TO SAY, THOUGH, THAT IT WAS NOT A POPULAR PICK WITH EVERYONE. YOU KNOW, I STILL STAND ACCUSED BY SOME TODAY, PROBABLY IN THIS ROOM, OF HIRING ROB AS A RINGER FOR THE CHILI COOKOFF TRIVIA TEAM. AND THAT'S TRUE, ROB. I'M SORRY. BUT OBVIOUSLY, THAT WASN'T THE ONLY REASON. YOU KNOW, THERE ARE A NUMBER OF US WHO HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGE AND THE HONOR OF SERVING AS COMMENTATORS IN MISSION CONTROL OVER THE YEARS BUT VERY FEW OF US HAVE EARNED THE ICONIC STATUS OF THE VOICE OF MISSION CONTROL. THERE WERE THOSE DISTINCTIVE AND MEMORABLE VOICES FROM THE PAST LIKE SHORTY POWERS, JACK KING, JOHN McLEASH, JACK RILEY, DOUG WARD AND OTHERS THAT FOLLOWED THROUGHOUT THE SHUTTLE PROGRAM, INCLUDING MYSELF, WHO ALL CONTRIBUTED UNIQUELY TO THIS PROCESS OF STORY TELLING AND SHARING HUMAN SPACE FLIGHT WITH THE PUBLIC. BUT IF YOU EVER LISTEN TO ROB CALL A LAUNCH OR A LANDING, IT'S NOT JUST THE VOICE YOU'LL REMEMBER. YOU WILL REMEMBER THE VOICE. I PROMISE YOU THAT. BUT YOU'LL ALSO REMEMBER THE MISSION. YOU'LL ALSO REMEMBER THE CREW, AND YOU MIGHT REMEMBER MOST OF THINGS THAT OCCURRED ON THE WAY UPHILL OR ON THE WAY BACK. BECAUSE ROB -- ROB WAS A STORY TELLER, AND HE SHARED THIS PROGRAM IN TERMS THAT PEOPLE COULD EMBRACE. HIS PASSION, HIS PRECISION, AND HIS GIFT FOR SHARING THE HUMAN SPACE FLIGHT EXPERIENCE ARE ABSOLUTELY SECOND TO NONE. HIS IMPACT ON PUBLIC AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF HUMAN SPACE FLIGHT ARE IMMEASURABLE. LET'S TAKE A LOOK. ♪♪ ♪♪ >> THIS IS MISSION CONTROL HOUSTON. [ APPLAUSE ] >> HOW IS EVERYONE? WHAT A NIGHT. NEVER THOUGHT I'D EVER FOLLOW JEFF CARR AND SPACE POOP AT THE SAME TIME, BUT I FINALLY MADE IT TO THE BIG LEAGUES, RIGHT? MEMBERS OF THE RNASA FOUNDATION, THE ROTARY CLUB, DISTINGUISHED GUESTS, COLLEAGUES AND FRIENDS, 56 YEARS AGO, A KID GROWING UP IN THE BRONX IN NEW YORK WENT SHOPPING WITH HIS FATHER TO A RADIO SHACK STORE. THAT KID RECEIVED A GIFT OF A SMALL TOSHIBA TRANSISTOR RADIO NO BIGGER THAN THE HOLSTER THAT HOLDS YOUR SMARTPHONE TODAY. THAT KID WAS ME. A MONTH AFTER JOHN F. KENNEDY WAS INAUGURATED PRESIDENT. THREE MONTHS LATER ON THE NIGHT OF APRIL 12, 1981 -- 1961, MY DAD, MY MOTHER AND I SAT AROUND THE KITCHEN TABLE IN OUR APARTMENT IN THE BRONX LISTENING TO THAT RADIO OVER DINNER AS THE LEGENDRY LOWELL THOMAS ANNOUNCED ON THE CBS RADIO NETWORK EVENING NEWS THAT YURI GOGARIN HAS LAUNCHED AS THE FIRST HUMAN IN SPACE. EVEN AT THE AGE OF 12, I RECOGNIZED THE POWER AND THE IMPACT OF THAT MOMENT. PARTLY THROUGH MY INSTINCTS AND MY LOVE FOR CURRENT EVENTS, PARTLY THROUGH THE WONDER OF RADIO, THROUGH THE WONDER OF THE SPOKEN WORD. THREE WEEKS LATER, I TOOK THAT TRANSISTOR RADIO TO CLASS AT PS 86 IN THE BRONX ON A FRIDAY MORNING AND SAT IN THE BACK OF THE ROOM LISTENING TO CBS RADIO'S COVERAGE OF ALLAN SHEPARD'S RIDE ABOARD FREEDOM 7 TO BECOME THE FIRST AMERICAN TO FLY IN SPACE. IT WAS ONLY A MONTH INTO A BASEBALL SEASON LIKE NO OTHER IN WHICH ROGER MARRIS AND MICKEY MANTLE BEGAN THEIR PURSUIT OF BABE RUTH'S HOME RUN RECORD. MARRIS AND MANTLE, THAT WAS THE DUO. BUT THE DERRING DO OF SHEPARD WAS SOMETHING ELSE. I WAS HOOKED ON SPACE AS IF IT WAS SOME EXOTIC NARCOTIC. I WAS JEALOUS THAT I HAD TO WAIT FOR WALTER CRONKITE TO REPORT THE NEWS EVERY NIGHT, THAT HE KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THE WORLD BEFORE I DID. THAT WAS THE EXOTIC NARCOTIC OF NEWS, JOURNALISM AND BROADCASTING THAT LURED ME INTO A CAREER I COULD HAVE NEVER IMAGINED POSSIBLE. COVERING THE PATTY HAERS KIDNAPPING, THE PEOPLE'S TEMPLE MASS SUICIDES, SAN FRANCISCO CITY HALL ASSASSINATIONS, FOUR PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS, SUPER BOWLS, THE SUMMER OF 1984, NATURAL DISASTERS, AND SPACE, THOSE WERE THE PUNCTUATION MARKS OF MY CAREER IN BROADCASTING AND TO ULTIMATELY BE INVOLVED IN COVERAGE OF THE SPACE PROGRAM FOR NASA, OH, FROM THE BRONX TO BICONOR FROM KFC TO KHAZAKSTAN, IT IS BETTER TO BE LUCKY THAN IT IS TO BE GOOD. INCREDIBLY, MY CAREER HAS SPANNED THE HEIGHTS OF HUMAN TRIUMPH AND THE DEPTHS OF HUMAN FAILURE, THE CHEERS AND THE TEARS OF HUMAN ENDEAVOR. IT IS CALLED THE SUBLIME SYMMETRY OF HISTORY BUT WHETHER TRIUMPH OR TRAGEDY, IT ALL CAME DOWN TO COMMUNICATING THE NEWS, RELAYING THE INFORMATION TO THE MEDIA AND TO THE PUBLIC IN VERY CLEAR, UNAMBIGUOUS WORDS. COMING FROM A WIRE SERVICE RADIO NETWORK BACKGROUND, YOU LEARN VERY QUICKLY THAT YOU, NO ONE ELSE BUT YOU, WERE THE SINGULAR AUTHORITY FOR THE DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION. YOU HAD TO BE CORRECT. ALL THE TIME. YOU HAD TO REPORT THE FACTS AND LET THE PUBLIC DECIDE FOR ITSELF HOW TO INTERPRET THAT INFORMATION. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU COULD NEVER, EVER BE WRONG. EVEN TODAY, A HALF CENTURY AFTER I BEGAN MY CAREER AT A SMALL RADIO STATION IN BRIDGE PORT, RESPONSIBILITY TO REPORT ACCURATELY EVERY SINGLE TIME FOLLOWS ME AS MY BIBLE OF BROADCASTING. IN AN ERA WHERE COMMUNICATIONS HAS BECOME SOMEWHAT IMPERSONAL, THE ART OF BROADCASTING AND THE TABLETS OF JOURNALISM ARE THREATENED LIKE NEVER BEFORE. READING A BOOK IS PASSE. THE SKILLS REQUIRED TO HOLD A CONVERSATION WITH ANOTHER PERSON ARE BECOMING EXTINCT. WRITING IS FAST BECOMING A LOST ART. YET WE HAVE SO MANY MORE ADVENTURES TO TELL IN HUMANKIND'S ENDLESS JOURNEY TO THE STARS. TODAY, NO MORE AND NO LESS THAN THE SOLEMN RESPONSIBILITY I HAD MORE THAN A HALF CENTURY AGO TO TELL OTHER STORIES OF CONQUEST, TRIUMPH, AND TRAGEDY, WE ARE STILL THE STEWARDS OF THE SAME RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT WE COMMUNICATE CLEARLY AND UNAMBIGUOUSLY, ARMED WITH AN ARSENAL OF INFORMATION WITH WHICH TO PROVIDE CONTEXT AND MEANING TO A WHOLE NEW WORLDWIDE WAY, HAS THE SAME THIRST FOR SPACE EXPLORATION AS I DID SO MANY DECADES AGO. WHEN ATLANTIS LANDED AT THE KENNEDY SPACE CENTER ALMOST SIX YEARS AGO, CLOSING OUT THE ICONIC SPACE SHUTTLE PROGRAM, I WAS PRIVILEGED TO HAVE HAD THE HONOR TO REPORT TO THE WORLD THAT SPACE SHUTTLE HAD FIRED THE IMAGINATION OF A GENERATION. DEAR FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES, IT'S TIME TO LIGHT THAT FIRE AGAIN THROUGH WORDS THAT MATTER. TO CLEAR UNAMBIGUOUS COMMUNICATIONS, WE CANNOT ONLY LIGHT THAT FIRE BUT STOKE IT INTO A WILD FIRE OF WONDERMENT. JOHN F. KENNEDY TOLD US IN HIS INAUGURAL ADDRESS IN 1961 THAT THE TORCH HAS BEEN PASSED TO A NEW GENERATION. WELL, IT'S TIME TO USE THAT TORCH TO REIGNITE THAT FIRE FOR YET ANOTHER NEW GENERATION AS WE PUNCH THROUGH THE VEIL OF LOW EARTH ORBIT AND IN DOING SO, WE CAN TELL THE WORLD OF OUR NEW JOURNEY TO THE STARS. BUT WE MUST DO SO WITH WORDS THAT MATTER, CLEARLY AND UNAMBIGUOUSLY. THAT'S THE TOUCH STONE OF MY CAREER, THE TOUCH STONE OF SO MANY JOURNALISTS WHO PRECEDED ME AND WHO LAID THE GROUND WORK FOR OUR ABILITY TO USE THE FIRST AMENDMENT TO INFORM AND EDUCATE THE WORLD. FOR ALL THE MILES I HAVE TRAVELED IN THE PURSUIT OF REPORTING, THERE ARE MANY, MANY MORE MILES TO GO. NEVER FORGET, DEAR FRIENDS, THAT THE POWER OF THE SPOKEN WORD THAT MOVED ME SO MUCH ON THE NIGHT OF APRIL 12, 1961, REMAINS THE LIFE BLOOD, THE EPICENTER OF COMMUNICATIONS, WHICH IS SO VERY, VERY CRUCIAL IN ALL OF OUR LIVES. IT MOVED ME, AND IT CAN MOVE ALL OF US IN THE DAYS AND THE DECADES TO COME, TO VENTURE FORTH AND EXPLORE NEW WORLDS THAT WE ONCE ONLY READ ABOUT IN THE HISTORY BOOKS. NOW, WE CAN WRITE NEW HISTORY BOOKS AND ONCE AGAIN PASS THE TORCH. INCREDIBLE HONOR. I WILL CHERISH IT FOREVER. THANK YOU. >> WOW. WOW. WOW, WOW, WOW. GEEZ. ROB. WHAT DO I SAY? YOU KNOW, ROB IS -- ROB IS A MAN OF MANY WORDS. THERE ARE SO MANY WORDS AND SO LITTLE TIME WHEN IT COMES TO ROB, REALLY, WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT. WHEN I WAS COVERING LAUNCHES FOR CNN, THAT WAS -- THOSE REMARKS WERE BEAUTIFUL. WHEN I WAS COVERING LAUNCHES FOR CNN, THE PRODUCERS INSISTED THAT I WEIGH IN AND SAY SOMETHING WHENEVER THE PALN CONSOLE WOULD TAKE A PAUSE OR A BREAK. MORE SERIOUSLY, I WANT TO THANK RNASA AND ESPECIALLY JOHN GRUNSFELD FOR ASKING ME TO INTRODUCE HIM HERE TONIGHT, AND FOR HAVING ME HERE. I'VE HAD A LONG AND VERY, VERY LUCKY CAREER IN THE SPACE BUSINESS, BUT HOUSTON HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE MOST SPECIAL PLACE FOR ME. THE TROUBLE IS THE DIFFICULTY IS TO KEEP IT IN THE FIVE TO SEVEN MINUTES THAT THEY ALLOTTED ME TO DO THAT. LET ME START BY SAYING WHAT A UNIQUE ROLE THAT I THINK JOHN HAS EXEMPLIFIED IN THE YEARS THAT HE HAS BEEN AT NASA AND THE YEARS THAT I HAVE KNOWN HIM. WE HAVE HEARD, SINCE THE DAWN OF THE SPACE PROGRAM, ABOUT CONTROVERSIES BETWEEN PEOPLE WHO WANT OUR NATION'S TAX DOLLARS TO BE SPENT PROSECUTING SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY, UNMANNED SPACE FLIGHT, IT USED TO BE CALLED, AS LESS ENLIGHTENED TIMES, AND THEN WE'VE HAD ANOTHER CONTINGENT THAT BELIEVES THAT HUMAN EXPLORATION OF THE NEW FRONTIER, STILL A NEW FRONTIER, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO BE DOING WITH MONEY THAT WE, AS A NATION, CAN AFFORD TO SPEND ON SPACE. AND THERE HAS BEEN, THAT I CAN REMEMBER, 60 YEARS OF ARGUING BETWEEN THESE TWO CAMPS. JOHN GRUNSFELD IS A PERSON WHO MARRIES THOSE TWO CAMPS, AND HE DOES IT ELEGANTLY AND HE DOES IT PROFESSIONALLY, AND HE DOES IT WITH EXPERTISE, WHICH IS BEYOND SUPERLATIVE. A TRULY VETERAN ASTRONAUT OF FIVE SPACE FLIGHTS AND A TRUE BELIEVER IN THE VALUE AND IMPORTANCE OF HUMAN SPACE EXPLORATION, JOHN IS ALSO A PERSON WHO HAS BEEN A CHIEF SCIENTIST AT NASA, THE HEAD OF NASA'S SCIENCE PROGRAM IN A SEPARATE INCARNATION AS ASSOCIATE ADMINISTRATOR FOR SPACE SCIENCE OR THE SCIENCE MISSION DIRECTOR AT NASA, AND HE'S BEEN THE DEPUTY AT THE SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE. THREE OF HIS SPACE FLIGHTS HAVE INVOLVED REPAIRING THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE, SOMETHING WHICH HOLDS A PARTICULAR AFFINITY FOR ME, BECAUSE BACK WHEN I USED TO DO USEFUL WORK, I ONCE WORKED ON THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE. AND IT IS -- IT IS, TODAY, ONE OF MY OWN MOST HONORED ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO HAVE BEEN PART OF PRODUCING THE HUBBLE. JOHN WAS PART OF MAKING THE HUBBLE BETTER, NOT ONCE, BUT THREE TIMES. MANY YEARS AGO, IN TESTIMONY SUPPORTING THE BUILDING OF THE SUPER CONDUCTOR SUPER COLLIDER, WHICH REGRETTABLY DID NOT OCCUR, LEON LETTERMAN TESTIFIED ON ITS BEHALF TO THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES, AND DR. LETTERMAN, WHEN ASKED IF THE SUPER CONDUCTOR -- CONDUCTING SUPER COLLIDER WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR THE DEFENSE OF THE UNITED STATES, DR. LETTERMAN RESPONDED, NO, IT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MAKE IT WORTH DEFENDING. I THINK THOSE OF US HERE WOULD RECOGNIZE THE CORE TRUTH OF THAT IN JOHN'S CAREER HE HAD DONE NOTHING BUT SUCCOR THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE IN ITS MANY HOURS OF NEED, HE WOULD STILL BE WORTHY OF TONIGHT'S RECOGNITION, BUT HE HAS DONE SO MUCH MORE. I THINK IT IS SAFE TO SAY YOU WOULD NOT HAVE A FUTURE MARS PROGRAM TODAY WITHOUT JOHN'S EFFORTS AS HEAD OF THE SCIENCE MISSION DIRECTORATE. THE OTHER THING THAT I MUST SAY TONIGHT IS THAT JOHN HAS DONE ALL OF THIS WITH A SURPASSING MODESTY AND DEGREE OF SELF-EFFACEMENT. HE'S ONE OF THE MOST CAPABLE PEOPLE THAT I KNOW IN ARENAS RANGING FROM MUSIC TO MOUNTAIN CLIMBING TO FLYING AIRPLANES TO, OH, NEVER MIND, BEING AN ASTRONOMER AND AN ASTRONAUT AND A MANAGER OF A MAJOR PIECE OF NASA. BUT YOU WOULD NEVER HEAR ABOUT ANY OF THESE ACCOMPLISHMENTS FROM HIM. YOU HAVE TO HEAR ABOUT THEM FROM OTHER PEOPLE. YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO PROBE A LITTLE BIT TO FIND OUT ALL OF THE THINGS THAT HE'S DONE. NO ONE HAS YET RECEIVED THE RNASA AWARD TWICE IN HIS OR HER CAREER. SO I'M GOING TO CONCLUDE BY SUGGESTING THAT I SUSPECT THE FIRST PERSON TO DO SO WILL BE JOHN AFTER HIS TENURE AS NASA ADMINISTRATOR, WHICH LIES STILL IN HIS FUTURE. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, A PROJECT THAT WE DID ON MY SECOND SPACE FLIGHT, STS 81, WHICH I'M REMEMBERED AS THE HUBBLE REPAIRMAN, AND IT IS A TRUE STORY THAT IN A CONVERSATION WITH PRESIDENT OBAMA, FROM 600 KILOMETERS, 350 MILES ABOVE EARTH, TRAVELING 17,500 MILES AN HOUR, SOME FOLKS IN THE ROOM WERE THERE, WE TALKED TO THE PRESIDENT, SCOTT AHLMANN AND MYSELF, AND THE FIRST THING HE ASKED IS, CAN YOU SEE CHICAGO? BUT THAT'S NOT THE INTERESTING PART OF THE STORY. AS WE'RE WALKING OUT -- AND HOW MANY OF YOU KNOW GEORGE ABBEY? I THOUGHT SO. AND WE DO THAT TO ANSWER SOME FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS ABOUT OURSELVES, ABOUT OUR UNIVERSE, WHERE DID WE COME FROM, WHERE DID THE UNIVERSE COME FROM. WHERE DID THE ATOMS THAT WE'RE MADE OUT OF COME FROM, AND WE ARE LEARNING THOSE STORIES. IT IS A STORY. HOW DID THE SOLAR SYSTEM FORM. HOW DID LIFE FORM ON EARTH. WHERE ARE WE GOING? WHAT'S THE TRAJECTORY OF PLANET EARTH IN THE FUTURE? NOT JUST THE DISTANT FUTURE BUT THE NEAR FUTURE. PRETTY IMPORTANT QUESTION. WHAT'S THE FATE OF THE UNIVERSE? AND WHERE ARE WE AS THE HUMAN SPECIES GOING? ARE WE JUST GOING STAY HERE ON EARTH, OR ARE WE GOING TO REACH OUT, ARE WE GOING TO EXPLORE. THE ANSWER IS YES, WE ARE. AND THE QUESTION THAT'S FASCINATING ME MOST OF LATE IS THE QUESTION OF, ARE WE ALONE? IS THERE LIFE BEYOND EARTH? AND OUR SOLAR SYSTEM IN THE UNIVERSE. AND I'LL TAKE A QUICK POLL BECAUSE IT'S FUN AND I'M NOT GOING TO ASK HOW MANY OF YOU THINK WE'RE ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE, BUT A COMPOUND QUESTION. HOW MANY OF YOU THINK WE'RE NOT ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE AND THAT WE WILL FIND OUT IN THE NEXT 20 YEARS? ALL OF SPACE IS A HUMAN ENDEAVOR. OUR ROBOTIC EXPLORERS, CURIOSITY ON MARS, CURIOSITY HAS A TWITTER ACCOUNT. CURIOSITY IS A SHE. A LOT OF US FOLLOW HER. THE DAWN SPACECRAFT. THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE. I MEAN, YOU NAME IT. ALL OF THOSE OBSERVATORIES DON'T DISCOVER ANYTHING. PLUTO NEW HORIZONS DIDN'T DISCOVER ANYTHING. PEOPLE HERE ON EARTH DISCOVER THINGS USING THOSE ROBOTIC TOOLS. IT'S A HUMAN ACHIEVEMENT. WE ARE VERY GOOD AT CREATING THESE INNOVATIVE MISSIONS THAT EXPLORE, DISCOVER. WE'RE NOT SO GOOD AT CELEBRATING THESE ACHIEVEMENTS AND I WANT TO THANK RNASA FOR WORKING SO HARD TO RECOGNIZE, HONOR, AND CELEBRATE THESE ACHIEVEMENTS IN SPACE, NOT THOSE FEW THINGS I'VE DONE BUT THE FEW THINGS -- THE MANY THINGS THAT WE ALL DO AND THE OTHER AWARDEES. THESE EFFORTS OCCUR BECAUSE OF THE INCREDIBLE SKILLS OF A VERY LARGE GROUP OF DEDICATED PEOPLE IN THE NASA FAMILY. I'VE COME TO CONCLUDE THAT NASA IS REALLY A CULT. THE CALL TO EXPLORE SPACE DRAWS PEOPLE IN. IT INCITES THEM TO WORK LONG HOURS, INSANELY LONG HOURS, AND MAKE SACRIFICES THAT AT TIMES SEEMS WELL OVER THE TOP. ANYBODY EXPERIENCE THAT? ANY OF THE FAMILY MEMBERS HERE THINK THAT? WHY DO WE DO THESE MIGHTY THINGS? BECAUSE IT'S IMPORTANT. BECAUSE IT'S ABOUT HUMANITY'S FUTURE. BECAUSE IT IS ESSENTIAL TO OUR ECONOMY, HUMAN HEALTH, NATIONAL DEFENSE, AND INSPIRING A NATION. BECAUSE THE INSPIRATION, THE WONDER AND AWE THAT NASA MISSIONS GENERATE IS WHAT DRIVES US ALL. 55 YEARS AGO, NOT FAR FROM WHERE WE ARE TONIGHT, PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY SPOKE THESE WORDS, ALL TOO FAMOUS WORDS, AND I KNOW YOU'VE HEARD THIS OVER AND OVER AGAIN, BUT I COULDN'T HELP MYSELF. "WE CHOOSE TO GO TO THE MOON. WE CHOOSE TO GO TO THE MOON IN THIS DECADE AND DO THE OTHER THINGS NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE EASY BUT BECAUSE THEY ARE HARD. BECAUSE THAT GOAL WILL SERVE TO ORGANIZE AND MEASURE THE BEST OF OUR ENERGIES AND SKILLS. BECAUSE THAT CHALLENGE IS ONE WE ARE WILLING TO ACCEPT AND ONE WE ARE UNWILLING TO POSTPONE. AND ONE WHICH WE INTEND TO WIN. AND WE HAVE BEEN WINNING EVER SINCE." WE LEAD THE WORLD IN SPACE AND EARTH SCIENCE. WE LEAD THE WORLD IN HUMAN EXPLORATION. WE GOT OUR START WITH APOLLO AND OUR INCREDIBLE LUNAR MISSIONS. OUR AMAZING SPACE SHUTTLE POWERED US TOWARDS TO HONE OUR SKILLS IN SPACE WITH RELIABLE, REUSABLE SPACE SYSTEMS. WE PERFECTED SPACE ROBOTICS. WE REFINED SPACE WALKING TO A FINE ART AND I THINK WITH HUBBLE, TO, YOU KNOW, INCREDIBLE STATE WHERE WE WERE -- WE'RE MOVING TINY SCREWS AND PULLING CIRCUIT BOARDS IN SPACE. WITH OUR SPACE AND EARTH SCIENCE PROGRAM, WE HAVE UNRAVELLED THE MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE, UNDERSTANDING OUR SUN IN GREATER DETAIL, MERCURY, VENUS, MUCH ABOUT THE EARTH, SOME OF WHICH IS VERY DISTURBING. OUR MOON, MARS, YOU KNOW, ON OUT INTO THE SOLAR SYSTEM WITH JUNO AND JUPITER NOW CASINI DOING SOME INCREDIBLE GYMNASTICS AT THE END OF ITS REMARKABLE MISSION AND OF COURSE NEW HORIZONS AND BEYOND. THE MOST POWERFUL SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT EVER CREATED BY HUMANS AND WE'RE JUST GETTING STARTED. IN FACT, THIS WEEK IS HUBBLE'S 27th ANNIVERSARY IN SPACE. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HUBBLE. ON THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION, WE HAVE NOT ONLY SHOWN THAT IT SERVES TO ORGANIZE AND MEASURE THE BEST OF OUR ENERGIES BUT TO BRING TOGETHER THE BEST EFFORTS OF NATIONS AROUND THE WORLD. OF COURSE THERE IS STILL MUCH WORK TO BE DONE AND CHALLENGES AHEAD OF US IN THE EXPLORATION OF SPACE. BUT I REALLY DO BELIEVE THE PROSPECTS ARE INCREDIBLY BRIGHT. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HUMAN HISTORY, WE HAVE A NUMBER OF NEW CAPABILITIES COMING ONLINE FOR EXPLORATION, THE SPACE LAUNCH SYSTEM TO TAKE US FURTHER OUT INTO THE SOLAR SYSTEM WITH HUMAN EXPLORERS, SCIENTISTS, AND ENGINEERS. WE WILL SOON HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO SEND PLANETARY SCIENTISTS AND ASTROBIOLOGISTS TO THE SURFACE OF MARS. AND THE CURIOSITY LANDER -- ROVER HAS SHOWN US THAT MARS WAS ONCE HABITABLE AND THAT IT'S ALL THE INGREDIENTS OF LIFE, THAT IT HAD THE CHEMISTRY THAT COULD HAVE ENABLED LIFE AND WE'RE SEEING SIGNS OF ORGANICS AND SIGNATURES THAT LOOK VERY CONFUSING TO US THAT COULD BE EVEN FOSSIL EVIDENCE OF PAST LIFE. AND IT'S GOING TO TAKE MARS 2020 AND FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS, BUT I THINK HUMAN EXPLORERS IS WHEN WE'RE GOING TO MAKE THE MOST PROGRESS. WE HAVE THE ORION SPACECRAFT. WE HAVE COMMERCIAL CREW TRANSPORTATION. WE HAVE NEW HEAVY LIFT VEHICLES SUCH AS THE BLUE ORIGIN COMING ONLINE AND THAT ADDS TO WHAT IS A REMARKABLY RELIABLE STABLE OF LAUNCH VEHICLES, THE ATLAS 5 AND DELTA 4. THERE'S SOME DEVELOPMENTS YOU PROBABLY DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT, THINGS LIKE THE VENTURE CLASS LAUNCH SYSTEM, A NEW SMALL CLASS OF LAUNCHERS THAT'S GOING TO ENABLE A WHOLE NEW GENERATION OF SCIENCE CAPABILITIES IN LOW EARTH ORBIT AND MAYBE EVEN TO THE MOON. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HUMAN HISTORY, WE HAVE EFFORTS AND WORK TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION, ARE WE ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE. PERHAPS THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE WILL GET US A LITTLE BIT FURTHER, LOOKING AT THE ATMOSPHERES OF PLANETS AROUND NEARBY STARS, LAUNCHING OCTOBER 2018. THE MARS 2020 ROVER IS GOING TO CACHE SAMPLES FOR RETURN TO EARTH THAT, WHO KNOWS, COULD CONTAIN INCLUSIONS INSIDE OF THOSE ROCKS THAT WILL TELL US THAT LIFE DID EXIST ON MARS ABOUT THE SAME TIME LIFE STARTED ON EARTH. THE EUROPA CLIPPER WILL SAIL THROUGH PLUMES OF WATER FROM AN UNDER ICE OCEAN THAT HAS BEEN SITTING THERE PERCOLATING, A WARM SALTY OCEAN WITH ORGANICS AND CONNECTIONS TO UNDERSEA VENTS FOR 4.5 BILLION YEARS. IF LIFE ISN'T THAT HARD TO GET STARTED, THERE'S PROBABLY LIFE THERE AND WE'RE GOING TO SAIL THROUGH THOSE PLAUMZ AND SEE IF WE CAN DETECT THOSE SIGNS OF LIFE. A LANDER ON EUROPA IS JUST GETTING STARTED. IN 2018, THE SURVEY SATELLITE IS GOING TO LAUNCH AND TELL US WHERE OUR NEAR NEIGHBOR PLANETS ARE THAT ARE EARTH SIZED WITH ATMOSPHERES AND WE KNOW HOW TO BUILD A NEW TELESCOPE BEYOND JAMES WEBB THAT REALLY WOULD HAVE THE CAPABILITIES TO ANALYZE THE ATMOSPHERES OF PLANETS -- EARTH-LIKE PLANETS AROUND NEARBY STARS AND SEE SIGNS OF LIFE IF THEY EXIST AND I THINK WE'RE GOING TO HAVE HUMANS BUILDING THOSE TELESCOPES. THIS BRIGHT FUTURE IS NOT WITHOUT CHALLENGES. TO CREATE THAT FUTURE, WE NEED TO DARE MIGHTY THINGS. TO UNDERTAKE HIGH PERFORMANCE CHALLENGES. WE NEED TO BE BOLD AND AUDACIOUS, NOT INCREMENTAL. WE NEED STRONG AND TECHNICALLY CAPABLE LEADERSHIP, AND WE NEED TO BE WILLING TO MAKE BIG DECISIONS AND TO TAKE RISKS. I PERSONALLY BELIEVE OUR NEXT FRONTIER FOR EXPLORATION IS THE EXPLORATION OF MARS. WE HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE, THE CAPABILITY, THE RESOURCES, THE VEHICLES TO EMBARK ON THIS NEXT GRAND ADVENTURE, BUT PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT CHALLENGE OF ALL THAT WE NEED TO ADDRESS FOR SPACE EXPLORATION IS ALL OTHER PROGRESS IN THIS COUNTRY IS TO SUPPORT AND IMPROVE OUR NATION'S SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATION EFFORTS. IN THE END, THIS MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT CHALLENGE OF ALL. I'M OPTIMISTIC AND EXCITED ABOUT OUR FUTURE IN SPACE AND ON EARTH. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION. THANK YOU FOR AWARDING ME THE ROTARY NATIONAL AWARD FOR SPACE ACHIEVEMENT. I'M TRULY HONORED AND HUMBLED. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. ♪♪ >> JUST GOING TO LEAVE THAT TROPHY BEHIND. YOU KNOW, ONE THING I'D LIKE TO ADD ABOUT THAT -- THAT TRIP INTO THE MBL, THE NEUTRAL BUOYANCY LABORATORY. IF YOU'LL RECALL, WHEN I DID THAT, I WAS WORKING FOR CNN, AND THEN THAT MISSION GOT DELAYED BY QUITE SOME TIME. BY THE TIME THE MISSION FLEW, I WAS NO LONGER WITH CNN. I HAD BEEN DUMPED. SO, IN FACT, THE ENTIRE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIT GOT DUMPED BECAUSE WE KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THE KARDASHIANS. AND I FELT A LITTLE BIT BAD ABOUT THAT, BECAUSE ALL THAT MATERIAL THAT I SHOT OF ME DOING LAPS IN THE POOL AND ALL THE THINGS YOU GOT TO DO WAS NO LONGER MY PROPERTY. HOWEVER, EVERYTHING SHOT UNDERWATER WAS PUBLIC DOMAIN NASA FOOTAGE SO I DID PUT TOGETHER A LITTLE PIECE. IT, OF ME DOING THE PGT WITH HIM AND IN THE HUBBLE. IT WAS PRETTY AWESOME. AND THE REASON I BRING THIS UP, NOT JUST TO BRAG, BUT THAT WAS A GOOD BRAG, ACTUALLY, BUT IS THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER, JOHN HAS ALWAYS GONE OUT OF HIS WAY TO DO WHAT HE CAN TO COMMUNICATE THE WONDERMENT OF WHAT YOU ALL DO IN SPACE. AND IT'S HARD SOMETIMES TO COME UP WITH WORDS THAT WORK. YOU KNOW, WE TRY AS JOURNALISTS, AS YOU HEARD ROB TRYING TO TELL THE STORY, BUT THESE ARE THE GUYS -- THERE AREN'T MANY BEATS YOU COVER WHERE YOU CAN'T GO TO THE LOCATION. THIS IS ONE OF THEM. AND HE'S ALWAYS DONE A GREAT JOB IN TRYING TO SHARE IT WITH OTHERS AND FOR THAT, I COMMEND HIM. LET'S GIVE HIM ANOTHER ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR THAT. SO, IT HAS NOW BEEN 60 YEARS SINCE OMEGA ROLLED OUT ITS VENERABLE SPEED MASTER WATCH. THIS IS LIKE THE HOME SHOPPING CHANNEL RIGHT NOW. AS MANY OF YOU KNOW, IN 1963, IT BECAME THE FIRST WATCH TO PASS NASA'S RIGOROUS TESTING FOR FLIGHT QUALIFICATION, AND SOME GUY JUST WENT TO A JEWELRY PLACE IN HOUSTON, BOUGHT SOME WATCHES, AND THAT WAS THE ONE THAT PASSED. OUR NEXT SPEAKER FLEW IN SPACE JUST A FEW YEARS LATER, GEMINI 6A. WHAT DO YOU DO? HE WOULD KNOW. PLEASE GIVE A WARM WELCOME TO ONE OF THE GREAT PRIDES OF OKLAHOMA, ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREATEST AVIATORS EVER, AND A GENERALLY AWESOME GUY, HE HAS A LITTLE SURPRISE FROM OMEGA FOR OUR HONOREE TONIGHT. I DON'T WANT TO SURPRISE IT AND RUIN THE SURPRISE, AND SPOIL IT BUT HE DOES HAVE A SURPRISE. GIVE IT UP FOR LIEUTENANT GENERAL THOMAS P. CONGRATULATIONS ON AN ACTUAL SPACE AWARD, JOHN. OUTSTANDING CAREER AS AN ASTRONAUT AND THEN LATER ON ASSOCIATE ADMINISTRATOR OF NASA AND YOU'VE DONE SO MUCH TO HELP. I'D LIKE TO MAKE A COUPLE OBSERVATIONS. AS WE LOOKED AT THE STELLAR AWARD WINNERS AND ALL THE PEOPLE HERE, WE HAVE SO MUCH TALENT IN THIS COUNTRY. YET, AT TIMES, WE TAKE DIPS, AND AS MIKE GRIFFIN FOUND OUT AS NASA ADMINISTRATOR AND I'M SURE YOU HAVE FOUND AS THE ASSOCIATE ADMINISTRATOR FOR SCIENCE, THAT WITH POLITICAL UPS AND DOWNS, IT DOES -- IT MAKES IT GO SLOWER AND WE COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT FARTHER BUT WE'VE HAD SOME MAJOR SETBACKS AND MOST OF IT IS POLITICAL AND THEN ALSO MAYBE A FEW IDEAS BY PEOPLE WHO WERE ONB, WHAT WE HAVE TO DO, BUT THIS -- I GAVE CONGRESSIONAL TESTIMONY TO THE HOUSE SCIENCE SPACE AND TECH COMMITTEE IN FEBRUARY IN THEIR OPENING HEARING SESSION, AND MY MAIN PLEA WAS, LET'S HAVE SOME CONSISTENCY IN THIS AND CONTINUAL SUPPORT AND NOT UP AND DOWN. WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY IN THIS PERIOD OF TIME, BUT THINK HOW MUCH FARTHER WE COULD BE OR HOW MUCH FARTHER WE COULD GO IF WE HAVE CONSISTENT SUPPORT. AND THIS IS THE MAIN PLEA, BUT WE HAVE GREAT PEOPLE, AND JOHN, YOU HAVE EXEMPLIFIED ON THE HUBBLE TELESCOPE, AND THOSE REPAIRS, AND THE -- AND YOUR JOB THERE AS ASSOCIATE ADMINISTRATOR, THE HUBBLE TELESCOPE HAS A SPECIAL MEANING FOR ME TOO. MY FIRST, QUOTE, VOLUNTEER JOB, THAT DAN GOLDEN HIT ME UP FOR WAS TO CHAIR THE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE FOR THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION, AND MY EXECUTIVE SECRETARY WAS BILL VAN DINE HERE AND THE MAIN THING WAS NOT TECHNICAL. WE HAD TO DO SOME REAL HEAD KNOCKING IN MANAGEMENT. BUT WE GOT IT DONE, AND IN FACT, I HAD TO GIVE TESTIMONY BECAUSE, AGAIN, THE SCIENCE COMMITTEE DOUBTED THAT WE COULD REPAIR THAT TELESCOPE, WHICH IS ONE OF THE GREATEST INSTRUMENTS EVER INVENTED. BUT I THOUGHT IT WOULD CARRY OUT 95% OF THE PRIMARY AND PROBABLY 80% TO 85% OF THE SECONDARY. WE DID 100% OF THE PRIMARY AND PROBABLY 110% OF THE SECONDARIES. AND IT CONTINUED ON THROUGH THOSE SERVICING MISSIONS, AND YOU DID A SUPER JOB. WE'RE SO PROUD OF YOU. AND SO, CONGRATULATIONS, AND AGAIN, OUR MARKETING PEOPLE MADE A BIG BOX FOR A SMALL WATCH. >> THANK YOU. >> MILES MENTIONED IT WAS 60 YEARS AGO THIS YEAR THAT THE PROFESSIONAL SPEED MASTER WAS PERFECTED, AND NOW FIVE YEARS LATER, WALLY WORE IT AND ALL THE WAY THROUGH GEMINI, APOLLO, SKY LAB AND THE FIRST SERIES OF SHUTTLE FLIGHTS.
