History

In the early days of 1917, the Chinese community in Zamboanga City was growing rapidly.

The Zamboanga Chong Hua High School was established in 1919 as Zamboanga Chinese Elementary School. It had a population of over 100 students. Its founding fathers include Yu Si Chiong, Wee Chu Ha, Un Han Chiong and many others.

In 1924, the school moved to a bigger location along Jovellar street,[2] due to the rapid increase in the school's population.

In 1926, The school moved to a three-storey concrete building to accommodate more students. It was in SY 1926–1927, that the Chinese curriculum was offered in high school. It was only in 1929 that the school moved to its present location in Marahui Street[3] under the generosity of the Association of Rice Dealers and the concerted effort of the Chinese community.

During World War II, most of the school's facilities and documents were destroyed; however, Mr. Ong Bee Kong, one of the founding members of the school, and concerned citizens and benefactors, were able to reorganize the school and repair its buildings.

The Philippine government formally recognized the school in 1958.

By 1965, The four-storey building concrete building was built, replacing the old two-storey building, and four years later, in 1969, the school was 50 years old.

By 1978, an alumni association (ZCHHSAA),was created by Ms. Leticia Alvarez, comprising students that made it from first to tenth grade.

By 1981, a new building was built and turned over to the school board of trustees. And by 1989, a third building was built with a gym on the top floor.

That same year, the school had turned 70 years old, and had 3 buildings, namely:

In 2015, a fourth building was constructed catering pre-school and the ABM course of the senior high school. This was Building D or the Zhong Hua (中华) Building.

In 2019, the school was a century old.

Even until today, the school continues to be a beacon of success in the eyes of Zamboanga's Chinese community, and around the world.
