[Music] My mom was full of life. She was very creative, she had a... she lived a simple, but really fulfilling life. She had fourteen grandchildren. The last one, she didn't get to meet. [Music] She was on her way, on an unseasonably warm afternoon, April 15th, to go hiking with her best friend. On that same road, a young driver - 19 years old - hit my mom at 70 miles an hour. [Music] There was no attempt to brake. There were no skid marks. My mom's best friend said they were talking away, and one second she was there, and the next she was gone. [Music] I just, I couldn't believe, I couldn't believe this happened to our family. It's something that was completely, 100% preventable. It didn't have to happen. It just didn't have to happen. I used to talk on my cell phone when I drove. The more I researched about distracted driving... it was one of those items where, once I really understood and researched the facts, I haven't used my cell phone driving since April 16th of 2009. [Music] It's just not about numbers. It's not, when you hear there's been an accident or a fatality on 494, use a different route. It means somebody received a phone call saying, "I'm sorry, there's been an accident. Your loved one didn't make it." [Music] Even if you ignore all of the statistics,   and you think the risk is low and that it won't happen to you, the consequences are huge. I would not want to be responsible for causing this amount of pain to someone I loved or to someone else who has people that love them. It's not worth it. It's not worth it at all. [Music] Distracted driving kills. Safe driving starts with you.
