  • ARTIST PORTRAIT: WILLI BLÖß - COMIC KÜNSTLER BIOGRAFIEN

Transcription

Willi Bloess - Artist Biographies Comic Series I was working in the advertising industry. Put out many texts and pictures. But I always knew I wanted to do something on my own. And then I had the idea to create comic biographies. After speaking to teachers and people of museums I knew they needed an alternative to those heavy books. It's very well investigated. There's nothing added to the truth. I just have the opportunity to illustrate things we don't have pictures of. This is Otmar Alt working as a chauffeur in 1950's Berlin. Frida Kahlo in her bathtub figuring out her next painting. This is Salvador Dali with his muse Alain Tap. Later known as Amanda Lear. I started out as an architect. And later I put out first comic strips. Now I'm a writer and illustrator. At the moment I'm working on the 21st book. It's about Edward Hopper. It includes the famous scene of the Nighthawks. The one in the coffee bar. I almost finished that book. It will be out this year. All in all I've sold 100,000 books in ten years. All of them via my website. Mostly to shops of museums and art teachers. I can write and draw two books a year. So it takes about six months to finish a book. Two thirds of the time I just spend on researching. People really like my books. Managers as well as teenagers. People who don't want to read other historical books. At the moment I'm looking for a helping hand. Someone who likes to help me doing the administrative work. I like to fully concentrate on the creative part. There's one image I really like. It's the Barcelona picture off the book about Niki de Saint Phalle. I'm married to a woman from Barcelona. We're having two children now...
