Population Europe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Population Europe is a collaborative network of Europe's demographic research institutes and centres.[1][2][3][4] It was founded in 2009. Its aim is to coordinate and strengthen research efforts and to contribute reliable facts and findings to public discussions of population issues.[5][6][7]

The network operates under the auspices of the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS)[8] and is supported by the European Commission.[6]

Population Europe currently includes 36 European research institutes; it further collaborates with institutions working on population and policy issues.[9]

Transcription

It is important to understand where people have settled in Europe and why they have chosen to live there. Looking at the map of Europe, where do you see the highest population densities? Keep in mind that humans often settle near sources of water due its uses in industry and in agriculture. In Europe, there are two areas where population densities are the greatest. The first is a north-south running belt from England through France and Germany and into Italy. The second is a east-west running corridor from England through Germany and into southern Poland. These concentrations of people are mostly due to the availability of resources, in particular coal, that power the industrial base that is located in this area. Also, it is important to realize that very few people live in northern Europe, where it is extremely cold, and also in the areas around the Alps, where alpine conditions prevail. This map shows the disparity of population in Russia. Due to warmer conditions and a history of centralized government, the majority of the people live west of the Ural Mountains. This is extremely important because the overwhelming majority of human activity (agriculture, industry, and governing) takes place here. The eastern two-thirds of Russia on the other hand is a frontier region, or unsettled region.

Organization

Population Europe has two branches: the Council of Advisors and the Information Centre.[10] The Council of Advisors assembles researchers.[11] The Information Centre coordinates the dissemination of demographic facts on population trends and policies to a scientific audience, as well as to the general public.[11]

The Population Europe Secretariat is hosted by the Max Planck Society. The Secretariat is situated at the WissenschaftsForum at the Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin.[6]
