[music] I'VE SEEN MANY PEOPLE WHO COME IN HERE AND THEY OOOH AND THEY AHHHH BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW THAT THIS EXISTS. PERHAPS IT'S A FASCINATION WITH THE UNKNOWN, BUT FEW NATURAL PLACES ARE AS INTRIGUING AS CAVES. THIS STUFF EXISTS JUST RIGHT BELOW OUR FEET. CAVES OFFER US A SELDOM- SEEN VIEW OF OUR WORLD AND AN INSIDE LOOK AT ITS GEOLOGY. AND LONGHORN CAVERN IN THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY OFFERS AN EVEN MORE UNIQUE CAVE EXPERIENCE. [gate opening] LONGHORN CAVERN IS A RIVER-FORMED CAVERN, AND THE ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND AS FAR AS WE KNOW HERE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. [water dripping] BORN FROM EROSION, LONGHORN CAVERN DOESN'T RESEMBLE MOST CAVES. THERE'S SCARCELY A STALACTITE IN SIGHT. BUT THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER NATURAL FORMATIONS, LARGE CHAMBERS, LOW TUNNELS, AND EVEN A BAT OR TWO TO SATISFY EXPECTATIONS. [tour group] TOUR GROUPS LEARN THAT THE CAVE PROVIDED SHELTER FOR NATIVE AMERICANS AND MAYBE EVEN SOME WILD WEST OUTLAWS. [gunfire] "I've got you, Sam!" "Up on the wall!" LEGEND HAS IT THAT SAM BASS USED LONGHORN CAVERNS AS A HIDEOUT AND THAT HE HID TWO MILLION DOLLARS IN GOLD. THAT IS PURE LEGEND. WE DON'T KNOW IF IT'S FACT OR FICTION. BUT THERE ARE OTHER TREASURES TO BE DISCOVERED HERE AND SOME ARE FOUND ABOVE GROUND, LIKE THE LASTING WORK OF THE CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS. WE'RE VERY, VERY PROUD OF THE CCC STRUCTURES HERE AT LONGHORN CAVERN STATE PARK. THE BUILDINGS ON THIS PARK WERE BUILT OUT OF THE SEDIMENT AND THE LIMESTONE BROUGHT OUT OF THIS CAVERN. [rocks breaking] THE CCC'S WORKMANSHIP ADDS ANOTHER LAYER OF HISTORY TO A SITE WITH A PAST AS VARIED AS ITS LIMESTONE WALLS. THE CONFEDERATES USED IT AS A STRONGHOLD AND MADE GUNPOWDER AND STORED GUNPOWDER UNDER THERE. THE PREVIOUS OWNER USED IT AS AN UNDERGROUND BALLROOM. THEY HAD A WOODEN DANCE FLOOR THAT THEY PUT IN. [swing music] THEY ALSO HAD AN UNDERGROUND CHURCH. "THEY SAY IT WAS THE FIRST AIR- CONDITIONED CHURCH IN TEXAS." BUT LONGHORN CAVERN IS NOT COMPLETELY CIVILIZED. THE WILD CAVE TOUR IS A TOUR WHERE YOU GO INTO PARTS OF THE CAVE THAT YOU DON'T SEE ON THE REGULAR WALKING TOUR. YOU HAVE TO WEAR HARD HATS, ELBOW PADS, KNEE PADS. IT IS PHYSICALLY CHALLENGING AS WELL AS MENTALLY CHALLENGING, BUT IT'S EXCITING. IT IS A TOTALLY UNIQUE, OTHER WORLD EXPERIENCE.
