The Mechoopda are a tribe of Maidu people, an indigenous people of California. They are enrolled in the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico Rancheria, a federally recognized tribe. Historically, the tribe has spoken Konkow, a language related to the Maidu language, and as of 2010, has created digital learning materials from old recordings of Emma Cooper, made during the 1940s as a part of the war effort.[2]

The tribe was formerly centered in a village located about 3+12 miles (5.6 km) south of contemporary Chico, California.[3] The Tribe was terminated in 1967, losing its 26-acre Chico Rancheria. Today, approximately one-half of the old Chico Rancheria is now owned by California State University, Chico (CSUC). The 11-acre university-owned portion of the former reservation is used by CSUC's agriculture, anthropology, and archaeology students.[4]

The Mechoopda regained federal recognition in 1992.

What I like most about Esken Hall is how we are not too far from campus, but we are still on campus. We have the soccer field next to us to play soccer, track field near us if we want to go running, we also have the residents that like to get involved with the community. Every day is a fun and new experience at Esken Hall. Jose is a resident of Chico State is Esken Hall, one of the two residence hall buildings, Mechoopda and Esken, in the central campus; very close to the Student Health Center and the university sports fields. These halls are the smallest and most intimate of all the halls at Chico State, which fosters a close knit feeling. Residents often think of it as one community spread over two close buildings. Between the two halls is a nice lawn area with places to study, hang out, or have a BBQ. It is a secluded little pocket of Chico State that's great for sitting, relaxing, or studying. Named after some of the indigenous peoples of the Butte County area, Mechoopda and Esken halls are two-story walk-up buildings and each accommodate about 120 students. The second floor areas feature vaulted ceilings and hallways. Student bedrooms are double occupancy with community restrooms on the corridor. They also have beds tucked into wall niches, increasing the floor space of your room. Like all other Chico State residence halls, Esken/Mechoopda Halls features fully furnished rooms, high speed wireless computer connectivity air conditioning, basic cable television, and the option to subscribe to telephone service with voicemail. Unlike other halls, you'll be able to set the temperature of your room with convenient wall mounted controls. Another aspect of building community in Esken/Mechoopda Halls are the areas open to all resident students that augment the academic life, like computer labs, study lounges, recreation rooms as well as laundry rooms to make your chores easier. You won’t need to be hoofing it to laundry mats While you live here with us. Around Esken and Mechoopda Halls is Chico State's famously lush greenery. The halls are are a quick walk from the heart of the Chico State campus. They're only moments away from the University Library, classroom buildings, Bell Memorial Union and the new Wildcat Recreation Center. They’re also not far from the fun and interest of downtown Chico, and less than a block from Acker Gym and the Student Health Center. Just one block from Esken and Mechoopda is Sutter Hall, home to the residential dining center. As a resident with us, you’ll be part of the Student Dining Program. It’s a good bet you'll be eating most of your meals with us in the Sutter Hall Dining Center. It's a state of the art dining experience. For more information on the dining program, take a look at your Living In Handbook or the Sutter Residential Dining Plan Video on our website. Beyond the planning we've put into the living experience and features, we take seriously our commitment to student safety. That's why each resident is provided with a unique room key for access to the main front door and their room. It's resistant to copying or tampering. Added to this is the fact the entire residence hall area of campus is patrolled regularly by University Police. Finally, each floor of Esken/Mechoopda Halls has a Residential Life staff representative. If you've got a problem, chances are they can help. What I like about Esken Hall is the residents and friends that I have here. There's always something going on here either hanging out with your friends or helping each other with homework. It’s just a fun environment for everyone. What I like about living on campus is having the support of other people that are also going to school with me because it will make my life easier. I don’t have to worry about paying bills every month, I don’t have to worry about my roommates paying their bills, I just have to worry about my personal life and academics. I would say pick University Housing, we have people here that care about you, you are going to make great friends that last a lifetime. You will have people that will have resources to help you out with anything you need, and it’s just a fun experience having that roommate that you are going to live with and make a friendship with for the rest of your life.
