Kaw River State Park is a state park in Topeka, Kansas, USA. Kaw River, the only urban type state park in Kansas, is relatively small at 76 acres (31 ha). The property was donated to the state in 2005 and officially opened to the public on September 4, 2010.

Located on the bank of the Kansas River in Topeka, the Kaw River State Park is located adjacent and west of Cedar Crest (location of the Kansas Governor's mansion, and the well developed 244-acre (99 ha) MacLennan Park) and just NE of the Kansas Wildlife & Parks Region 2 Office. To the west of the Kaw River State Park there are additional developed trails with some extreme terrain, however, this is posted private land and the owners have asked the public to stay out.

Kaw River State Park at 300 SW Wannamaker Road in Topeka is less than 1.5 years old, and like any youngster, it’s got some growing to do. Work continues throughout each season to develop and improve the area for public use. And a growing visitor base attests to its popularity. You could call this the “fitness state park.” At 76 acres, Kaw River is rapidly gaining attention for its hiking and biking trails. With the benefit of the park’s beauty as a plus, you can choose trails ranging from easy to difficult. Currently, more than 3 miles of trails provide great exercise through its beautiful hardwood forests. Hikers and bikers flock to the area for its trail opportunities, and still more work is planned. Trail maps and regulations are posted. Besides single- and double-track trails, a paved road through the park leads to the Kaw River boat access. This is also a popular, if somewhat strenuous, walking or jogging course for daily visitors. Bob Kirkwood of Topeka often rides his bike on the Kaw River trails with friends. He explains why: “I ride the trails because I need to keep myself in shape. At 62 years old, I’ve got to do something to keep myself in shape and it’s great exercise, great view, you’ve got the woods, the wildlife, the river, all within walking distance, it’s great.” Some trails, while usable and open, are not yet complete. A ¾ mile loop from the regional KDWPT office to the park’s main pond and back is now covered with gravel throughout its length. Fine chat will be added for easier walking and cycling during 2012. This trail was engineered at a relatively easy 5 percent grade as it winds through the terrain. When finished, it is expected to be easy enough to walk while pushing a stroller and will be nearly ADA compliant. This compressed time clip provides an idea how the trail looks in its scenic setting. Spring and fall are especially beautiful times to see it. The combination of exercise and outdoors experience makes Kaw River State Park a great place to visit during every season. No daily use fees are required to visit this park – just come for a free Kansas workout! I’m Mike Blair for KDWPT.

History

The trails were known to many locals as the Menninger trails, as they were part of the famous mental health hospital which was the former owner of the land. After Menniger's left town in 2003, the complex was purchased by St. Francis Health Care who, in 2005, donated the heavily wooded bluffs behind the hospital to the state of Kansas. The original development of the trails can be attributed to Menniger's. Following their departure the Kansas Trails Council maintained and developed the trails, along with the adjacent MacLennan Park trails. Jeffery Bender, the park's manager, began developing the park in January 2008. Prior to this, Jeffery Bender worked with the National Park Service in several western National Parks. On September 4, 2010, the park officially opened. On that day, visitors could participate in a Kaw River Run. At 10:30 a.m., Kansas Governor Mark Parkinson and his wife dedicated the park which already boasted a new paved road providing one of the only Kaw river access points near Topeka, two new parking lots, new gravel trails to the west of the access road, and new signage.
