Jharkhand tourist rape case

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jharkhand tourist rape case was an incident in March 2024 involving a gang rape of a tourist, a Brazilian-Spanish dual national woman, in Jharkhand, India.[1]

Incident

On 1 March 2024, a Brazilian-Spanish dual national tourist couple, a 28-year-old woman and her 64-year-old husband, who were on a motorbike tour across Asia, stopped for the night in Dumka district of eastern India's Jharkhand state. The couple who had arrived in Dumka district from Bangladesh, were camping in a forest while travelling on two motorcycles across eastern India on their way to neighbouring Nepal through Bihar.[2][3][4]

It is when a group of seven men gang raped the woman, assaulted her husband and threatened to kill them. The men held knives against their throats and took turns sexually assaulting the woman for about two hours while beating and restraining her husband. Around 11 p.m. local time (1730 GMT), the couple were found by a police patrol van which took them to a hospital.[5][6] The perpetrators allegedly also robbed them of ₹10,000.[7]

The travel blogger couple posted videos on their joint Instagram account with more than 200,000 followers regarding the incident.[8]

Response

The Jharkhand Police confirmed the incident. According to the police superintendent of Dumka, Pitamber Singh Kherwar, the medical tests confirmed the rape.[3]

On 2 March 2024, according to the police, three of the men involved were arrested while the search for the remaining four was ongoing. On 4 March 2024, the police arrested five more men in connection with the incident.[9][10]

A division bench led by Acting Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar of the Jharkhand High Court took suo motu cognisance of the incident and sought a report from Jharkhand's Chief Secretary and Director-General of Police as well as the Superintendent of Police of Dumka district.[7]

A cheque of ₹1 million was handed over to the victim by the Dumka Deputy Commissioner Anjaneyulu Dodde.[7]

The incident was condemned by India's National Commission for Women.[11]
