There are over 500 tennis courts in Parks across the city, twenty of which are in Flushing-Meadows Corona Park in Queens, Home of the US Open. Here and at hard surface courts all over the city, Wheelchair Tennis is fast becoming a popular and competitive sport. Wheelchair tennis is a great opportunity for a whole lot of folks to get involved in a game that can be played by anybody. Wheelchair tennis is not any different from able body tennis. The rules are almost the same. The only difference is, aside from being in a wheelchair, they are allowed 1 or 2 bounces and everything else is exactly the same as the rules in able body tennis. I think what's special about wheelchair tennis is that it's a game that can be played with a able bodied folks as well as people with disabilities. So it makes for some interesting and fun Doubles play, mixed doubles play. And it's a great recreational sport, or a competitive sport. It's an international sport with players in I don't know how many countries, but a lot. I've played in seven different countries, and I don't how many states- a whole bunch. Whether you're standing or sitting, it's a great sport and it's a lot of fun. I think we all like to win. Clinics are held here at the Billie Jean King national tennis center. It's a free program open to anybody, any age, any capability. I practice at the USTA with Aki basically every Sunday from eleven to one. Basically I drill them and work with their strokes and I prepare them for the Jana Hunsaker Wheelchair tennis tournament. Just played on center court where all the big time guys play, Andre Agasi Pete Sampras, Rodger Federer, so when you can say that you even stepped foot on the at ground it's a great honor. To have him play center court it's a great thing to us parents, at least for me as a parent, I'm ecstatic. To sit there and watch and see how he's developed his game is great. To see him win the game it's even better. Log on to the park website to find more about accessible, athletic, facilities and program in parks.
