Summary

Audio Clip from track 1 of CD 3: Prokofiev, Sergey. Prokofiev: The Complete Symphonies. London Symphony Orchestra in London conducted by Valery Gergiev, 2004; Symphony No.4 Op.47. London: Decca Music Group Ltd, 475 7655, 2006. Compact disc. Fair use is claimed (less than 30 seconds/10% of the CD track is used, academic project, used only in one article: "Symphony No. 4 (Prokofiev)"). This audio clip helps to display present important material in the first movement of Symphony No. 4 Op. 47. This type of ostinato playing was dubbed Machine Music by Marina Frolova-Walker and is an integral part of Prokofiev's style of composition. This is necessary to include because these ostinati were important in Prokofiev's earlier style which was neoclassical but later became important when he reworked Opus 112 in a socialist realist manner as Walker explains. This type of repetitive pattern helps symbolize two different things in two very different contexts for the same piece of music. There are currently no public domain recordings of this symphony because it is raely even performed let alone recorded. Until a youth symphony or a college orchestra records either versions of this symphony the only way to hear samples will have to be from copyrighted material.
