Sans-serif fonts have a choice about italics. They can slant the text (minimalist, simple), which is called oblique type or they can have a true italic, as most serif fonts do, which looks a bit like handwriting.
At top is News Gothic, a sans-serif from 1908 with an oblique italic. At centre is Gothic Italic No. 124 by American Type Founders, a very eccentric design from the 1890s with a true italic, as far as I know never digitised. Its italic resembles Didone fonts of the period. At bottom is a modern humanist sans-serif, Seravek, which also has a true italic, this time slightly more calligraphic.
