Description
The southeast corner of R Street and New Hampshire Avenue NW in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C. All three buildings are contributing properties to the Dupont Circle Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

From left to right: A private residence located at 1740 R Street NW. The Queen Anne style home was built in 1891 for Alfred Wood at a cost of $7,000. Previous occupants include Captain B. L. Reed of the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, Colonel Charles H. Arden (Assistant to U.S. Army Surgeon General George M. Sternberg), Allen R. Boyd (Secretary to Librarian of Congress Herbert Putnam), genealogist Douglas B. Thompson, Lieutenant Commander Walter C. Wagner of the Bureau of Ships, Ensign William J. Harris, Jr., (son of Senator William J. Harris) of the Bureau of Aeronautics, Lieutenant John L. Landenberger of the Bureau of Ships, and Argentine embassy Bilingual Secretary Antonia Cutillas.

The German Marshall Fund of the United States headquarters located at 1744 R Street NW. The Beaux-Arts style building was designed by noted architect Clarke Waggaman of the prominent Waggaman & Ray architectural firm in 1915. The original occupants were the Honorable and Mrs. Alban B. Butler. The September 15, 1919 edition of The Washington Times says the building was "designed after an Italian palace, which [the Butlers] visited in their travels and learned to love." Additional past occupants of the building include Lieutenant Colonel Dan T. Moore, the Embassy of Germany, the National Conference of States on Building Codes and Standards, lobbying firm Hudson, Creyke, Koehler & Tacke, the Small Business Timber Council, the Council on Social Work Education, TransAfrica, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

The Embassy of Nicaragua located at 1627 New Hampshire Avenue NW. The Georgian Revival style building was designed by Clarke Waggaman in 1914. Dr. Louis C. Lehr and his wife, Marie, were the original occupants of the building. Previous occupants include Undersecretary of State Norman H. Davis, U.S. Mint Director Raymond T. Baker, Representative Joseph Hendrix Himes, Commerce Secretary Roy D. Chapin, and longtime Nicaraguan ambassador Guillermo Sevilla-Sacasa.
