Description Sep. 11, 2001- Secretary of the Navy The Honorable Gordon R. England, left, and Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Vern Clark, center, watch CNN for information on New York's twin towers in between conference calls with the Commandant of the Marine Corps while assessing casualties and damage at the Pentagon. Secretary England was in Texas at the time of the attack, and immediately returned to Washington, where he was taken to an undisclosed location and received the first briefings with Admiral Clark. To the left of the CNO is Vice Admiral Mike Mullen, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Resources, Requirements and Assessments.
