Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Dr. Robert Gates appeared in the LBJ Auditorium on Thursday, January 28th, 2016, as the third annual Tom Johnson lecturer in a discussion with LBJ Presidential Library Director Mark Updegrove. Prior to the event, Dr. Gates signed his new book, A Passion for Leadership: Lessons on Change and Reform from Fifty Years of Public Service.Dr. Gates served as defense secretary for both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama. He also was an officer in the U.S. Air Force and worked for the CIA before being appointed director of that agency. He was a member of the National Security Council staff in four administrations, and served eight presidents, both Democrats and Republicans. He was president of Texas A&M University from 2002 to 2006; is currently chancellor of the College of William&Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree; was named president of the Boy Scouts of America in 2013; and has served on several corporate boards of directors.
