Object history
Deutsch: Gengenbach, von 1360 bis zum Anfall an Baden 1803 Reichsstadt, führte in den Siegeln – ältester Abdruck von 1267 – und im Wappen zunächst als „redendes" Bild für den Ortsnamen einen Gangfisch. Am 28. März 1505 gewährte König Maximilian I. eine Wappenbesserung, wobei das bisherige Wappen als Brustschild auf einen in silbernem Feld stehenden rot bezungten, golden bewehrten schwarzen Adler gelegt wurde. Dieses Wappen war fortan in Gebrauch, wurde lediglich im 19. Jahrhundert durch Siegel und Wappen ohne den Adler abgelöst, 1899 aber wieder als Stadtwappen angenommen und 1965 in der heute maßgeblichen Tingierung festgelegt. Die eingemeindeten Orte Bermersbach, Reichenbach (1975) und Schwaibach (1971) gehörten bis 1803 zum Territorium der Reichsstadt.
