  • Cuatro Ciénegas - water in the Chihuahuan Desert

Transcription

[MUSIC] Brad Wolaver The name Cuatro Cienegas, "cuatro" is four in Spanish and "cienegas" is marshes. These high, mountainous areas basically collect the rain in this arid, desert area and funnel it down into the valley floor where we have this really unique series of springs in the middle of the desert. [MUSIC] Dean Hendrickson Starting in about 1960 or so, biologists discovered this place. They started finding lots of new species, which weren't known anywhere else. There's lots of water in the middle of the desert, which makes it very special. And over the years, the '60s and '70s, there were lots of explorations that found an incredibly high number of endemic species or species that just occur here, both plants and animals. And it's basically due to the long persistence of wetlands in what is now a desert. It's like the Galapagos in that it has many endemic species that are known only from, in that case, Galapagos Islands. Here they're known from the wetlands of the Cuatro Cienages and the sea of the Chihuahuan desert. In Mexico, almost in all cases, protected areas have been declared on top of private lands or ejido lands. Ernesto Enkerlin And since most of the work is on privately owned land, most of our job entails giving incentives to landowners such that conservation does not become a burden to them. But it's always a challenge. Alfonso Felan (In Spanish) Dean Hendrickson There's an endemic box turtle. All of the box turtles with the exception of this one are terrestrial. This one is clearly aquatic. It spends almost all of its life in water, algae grows on its shell. And that's what brought biologists here. They came looking for this strange turtle. They found it and all these other species that occurred here as well. Their habitat has just contracted incredibly. There are records of these things from all along the edges of the mountain, lots of areas where there's now no water at all. [MUSIC] Alfonso Felan (In Spanish) Brad Wolaver The agriculture that's gone on here for the past 20 years is using ground water. The results of the withdrawal of ground water has dried the springs that used to feed the Rio Canon that provided the water to run the wheat mill and also irrigate the orchards of Cuatro Cienegas, which are all now essentially dry. Ernesto Trevino (In Spanish) Juan Riojas (In Spanish) Ernesto Trevino (In Spanish) [MUSIC] Barbara Winsborough I first came down in January of 1979. This area was one big marshland with a lake right here and a stream that flowed back to the springs that fed it from the marsh. But this was always at least partly full of water. The marsh plants have died off, and these invading species have taken over. Antonio Cantu (In Spanish) Segio Vitali (In Spanish) Laura Villareal (In Spanish) Maria De Lourdes We learned how to swim at the sequia. There was enough water to play and to swim. Everything was so green, so beautiful. That'll be very sad if our granddaughters and grandchildren wouldn't be able to enjoy this. Alfonso Felan (In Spanish) Ron Oldfield So we have basically this treasure of biodiversity here, and it could disappear in the near future. So that makes me feel like, in addition to it being an ideal place to study, it's also really necessary that we study it now. Dean Hendrickson I'm convinced there are some things we can do locally to manage the water in different ways to help bring back water levels. Somehow we're going to have to get all these people talking to each other and come to some understanding that will really allow Cuatro Cienegas to persist as a natural area and allow humans to continue to exist here in a sort of peace with the natural system. Families have lived here for many, many generations. Everybody's proud of the place, and everybody wants to see it as beautiful as it once used to be. Ernesto Enkerlin We believe that a lot of the potential for Cuatro Cienegas is nature-based tourism. The tourism that currently exists which is mostly people wanting to take a dip in a pool or in a poza is going to be becoming more sophisticated. Gabriel Villareal Jordan (In Spanish) [MUSIC]

Education

Enkerlin holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Agronomy and Animal Science from Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM, 1980) and a doctorate degree in wildlife and fisheries sciences from Texas A&M University at College Station (1995).[5]

Career

He has worked as a research professor at the Center for Environmental Quality (ITESM) and as an adjunct research scientist for the Center for Environmental Research and Conservation of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, in the United States.[7]

As a conservationist, Enkerlin has worked for several NGOs and co-founded Amigos de la Naturaleza[8] and Pronatura Noreste before joining the National Commission on Protected Areas by presidential appointment. During his tenure, Mexico increased its protected area coverage by almost 50% adding over 8 million hectares in different protected area categories and also became the country in the world with the most international protected area designations which it holds to this date (2015).[9] CONANP incorporated 26 new sites to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves and received recognition for over 125 wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.[4] Additionally, Mexico incorporated Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California (2005) and Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries (2009) as natural sites under the World Heritage Convention.[10] Enkerlin was also involved in negotiating and launching the first international agreement on wilderness signed by the governments of Canada, United States and Mexico in November, 2009, Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation for Wilderness and Protected Areas Conservation[11] and in establishing the first wilderness area in Latin America.

Formerly, Enkerlin was the Leader of the Legacy for Sustainability (ITESM); chair, World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA-IUCN);[12] Scientific President for Pronatura, Mexico's largest conservation NGO;[13] and board member of the Global Institute for Sustainability (ITESM)[14] and Fundación Coca-Cola. He is a retired Professor of Ecology and Sustainability from Monterrey Tech and has been dedicated to his family's sustainable vineyard and winery since 2016.[15] He is the brother of notable Mexican entomologist Walther Enkerlin.

Awards

His efforts at the National Commission on Protected areas of Mexico (CONANP), which he presided from 2001 to 2010, were distinguished with the 2005 Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Preservation by UNESCO[1] and one of the 2009 Distinguished Service Awards by the Society for Conservation Biology.[16] The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) awarded Enkerlin one of the 2008 Packard Awards and the Kenton Miller Award for Innovation in Protected Areas Conservation in 2009.[2]
