Elisabeth of Hesse (13 February 1539 – 14 March 1582) was a German noblewoman, by birth member of the House of Hesse and by virtue of marriage Electress of Pfalz-Simmern.[1] Sie starb (an einem – wie aus Briefen und Konsilien Marius’ an Elisabeths Ehemann Kurfürst Ludwig VI. hervorgeht – mit schmerzlosem Eiter- und Blutausfluss aus dem Darm verbundenen Leiden[2]) schon ein Jahr vor ihrem Ehemann und wurde am 1. April 1582 in der Church of the Holy Spirit (Heidelberg).[3]

Early life

She was born as the seventh child and fourth daughter of Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse and his wife, Duchess Christine of Saxony, daughter of George, Duke of Saxony.

Personal life

On 8 July 1560 she married Louis VI, Elector Palatine. They had the following children:

  1. Anna Marie (1561–1589), married Charles IX of Sweden
  2. Elisabeth (15 June – 2 November 1562)
  3. Dorothea Elisabeth (12 January – 7 March 1565)
  4. Dorothea (1566–1567)
  5. Frederick Philip (19 October 1567 – 14 November 1568)
  6. Johann Friedrich (died within a month of birth)
  7. Ludwig (died within three months of birth)
  8. Katharina (1572–1586)
  9. Christine (1573–1619)
  10. Frederick (1574–1610), succeeded as Elector Palatine
  11. Philip (4 May 1575 – 9 August 1575)
