Boulevard Richard-Lenoir, running from the Bastille to the Avenue de la République, is one of the wide tree-lined boulevards driven through Paris by Baron Haussmann during the Second French Empire of Napoleon III.

The Boulevard is named after François Richard and Joseph Lenoir-Dufresne, industrialists who brought the cotton industry to Paris in the 18th and 19th century. It is the site of a weekly art market and of a bi-weekly fruit and vegetable market that is one of the largest in Paris.

Hello, I'm David Hill with New York Habitat. Today we are going to explore the neighborhood of Oberkampf. Now, Oberkampf is like a small village within the city of Paris. New York Habitat Video with David Hill Oberkampf, Paris, France Oberkampf is located on the right bank and in the East side of Paris, just above La Bastille. It extends from the covered portion of the Canal Saint Martin to the famous Belleville village. Oberkampf gets its name from the Industrialist Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, famous for his "imprimé" or printed fabrics. King Louis XVI declared his company a "Manufacture Royale" in 1783, and gave Oberkampf the nobility title "écuyer", or esquire, and today he has a metro station and a street named after him. If you've watched our video tour of the Lower East Side in New York City, you'll see a similarity in Oberkampf. With its trendy cafes and restaurants, its Arab pastries, its colorful markets - you won't soon forget this hip village. Constantly showing up in movies, from Bollywood to Hollywood, there's a sense of magic in Oberkampf! Le Cirque d'Hiver - or The Winter Circus - was built in 1852. Here you can enjoy circuses and other shows all year round. Stop and have a look at its well-preserved colors and the sculpted Amazone of Pradier above the main entrance. On Boulevard Richard Lenoir, you will find 17,700m2 of green gardens made of willow trees and bracken, which are the evidence that you are in fact walking on the filled-in part of the Canal Saint-Martin, which once flowed all the way from the northeast side of Paris to the Seine. The super famous singer who everyone can sing at least one song from for example, "La Vie en Rose" has her own museum in Oberkampf. Visiting the Edith Piaf Museum is a great way to get a taste of old Paris. You won't regret climbing up the hill to Père Lachaise Cemetery. Either for Jim Morrison or Oscar Wilde, you'll find your moment of memory in this massive and mythical cemetery. The biggest in Paris in fact! People still come to the Père Lachaise for its hundreds of past and present celebrities. If you'd fancy blending in with the cool hipsters found in this area, there's no more authentic way than to rent a furnished apartment or vacation rental in the Oberkampf area. You'll get a true feeling of what it's like to live in this fantastic neighborhood. If you'd like to taste of the cuisine of Oberkampf, La bague de Kenza is a place to give in to temptation for its delicious "ailes de gazelle", loukoums and other Turkish pastries. If you're looking for a place to 'see and be seen', have a coffee at Chez Justine and then dinner at the famous Café Charbon. For late night fun head to Le Kitsch for its one-of-a-kind decor. Then it's time to take in the space odyssey decoration as you dance at the underground electro music club "Le Nouveau Casino". Well I hope you've enjoyed our little tour of Oberkampf today. And of course, we weren't able to cover everything in one video. If you've been to Oberkampf and have things to share, make sure you leave a comment in the comment section below. Hopefully this video has inspired you to start planning a trip to Paris. And of course, when you do next come to the City of Light, be sure to visit our website at nyhabitat.com and book a vacation rental or furnished apartment. I'm David Hill with New York Habitat. Thank you for watching this video. We hope to see you soon in Oberkampf!!
