Fans of romance and mystery listen up! This week's Pick is for you. Zoe is a murderer. At least, that's what she tells the death row inmate in a series of letters that form the arc of this epistolary novel. Unlike Mr. Harris, the inmate, Zoe hasn't been caught. But like Mr. Harris, or so she imagines, Zoe is absolutely sick with guilt. There's nothing slow about Zoe's story, although her letters are tentative about revealing the details of what actually happened. And the mystery of the murdered boy isn't the only one in this book. There's a lot going on with Zoe's family, too. I didn't find Zoe particularly relatable. She makes a lot of choices that are more than just immature—some of them seemed inexplicable. She is, however, sympathetic. Her grief and guilt feel real, and even though I didn't love her as a character, I did get sucked into the tightening coil of her painful choices. Mostly what this book is, is a fun romance with the PERFECT heartthrob love interest. I enjoyed it for that—and for the measured, suspenseful reveal of what really happened to one of the two boys that Zoe loved.

Background

Pitcher was born in a village in West Yorkshire. She studied English Literature at Oxford University. Her first novel, My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece, deals with the tragedy of a family torn apart by a terrorist attack.[1][2] It almost instantly became a bestseller and has been translated into over twenty languages.[3] It was shortlisted for the Red House Children's Book Award, the Galaxy Children's Book of the Year, the 2012 Carnegie Medal,[4] and the 2011 Dylan Thomas Prize. It won a Royal Society of Authors' Betty Trask Award, the Hull Children's Book of the Year and the prestigious 2012 Branford Boase Award for most outstanding debut novel.[5] Her books appeal to the ages 10–15 mostly.

Pitcher's second novel, Ketchup Clouds, won the Waterstones Children's Book Prize.[6] It also collected the Edgar Allan Poe award in 2014 for 'Best Young Adult Novel', awarded by the Mystery Writers of America.

Before her first book was published, Annabel trained as a teacher and taught English at Wakefield Girls' High School.
