My name is Madeleine Kohl, I am from South-Tyrol and study at Andrássy University in Budapest. I am Phlipp Siegert from Germany and study at Andrássy University in Budapest. My name is Shoasil, I am from Uzbekistan and study at Andrássy University in Budapest. I am Mirjana, I am from Croatia and study at Andrássy University in Budapest. The university is very small; everybody knows everybody, and it has a friendly atmosphere. This is what I missed at my previous university. The strong collegiality between the students and the professors is what I particularly like, that the focus here does not only lie on the academic development, but also on the personal relations. I am very satisfied with the professors. Many of them are diplomats and share their practical experiences in the lectures, which is what I especially like. Small, exquisite and friendly, beautiful premises, we know each other and spend a lot of time together. The building itself is incredibly wonderful, and the library is beautifully established. Because of the small seminar groups we can profit much more from the academic performance of the professors, than it would be the case in a lecture of 100-200-300 students. As we work in small groups, we know each other, and the professors know us, therefore the relationship between the students and the professors is very personal. We enjoy organising programmes apart from the lectures, we go to pubs in the evenings, or go on excursions together and take part in many cultural programmes as well. The community is fantastic. It is so friendly, you get so close, you don’t want to miss the others. You simply enjoy yourself. That’s it. I work here at this law firm, CMS in Budapest. This is an English office, which has set up a branch in Hungary. I established a German desk, this is practically a German department, and I as a German lawyer in Hungary am responsible for the German clients. The colleagues I got to know at that time, who I studied together with, are now my best friends or still colleagues in my work today. At the moment I work at the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation as a scientific assistant and the personal assistant of the director here in Budapest. Andrássy University provided me great help, as we learnt and experienced so many things, which proved to be very useful later in my professional life. Andrássy Uni with German as its official language was built on traditions, where everything is examined with a European aspect. I believe that this comparative aspect shall be very important in the future Europe. The experience of studying in German is an outstanding possibility, especially in Hungary, where the roots of the German culture are strongly present. As a German-speaking university Andrássy is the bridgehead of science in Central and Western Europe well into the southern and eastern European regions, and this peculiarity shall be expressed in its programmes and research activities. I think it is absolutely sure that this university has its future here in Hungary, as a Hungarian state university with German being its official language, and with the support of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Austria and the Federal Republic, that is Berlin. I would recommend studying at Andrássy, because it provides an ideal combination of theory and practice. If you are looking for that you are at the best place. You simply enjoy coming to this university, you look forward to the lectures, to meet your fellow students and to listen to the professors. I would strongly recommend studying at Andrássy, because I think it provides outstanding opportunities for your academic as well as your personal development. I stronlgy believe that it is really worth studying at Andrássy University. We make our students fit for Europe as our slogan says. The international environment of the university and the European aspect make this university unique.

History

Gyula Andrássy (portrait by Gyula Benczúr, 1884)

The idea to found AUB goes back to the “Ulm Declaration” of 22 February 2001. The prime ministers of Hungary, the Republic of Austria, the State of Baden-Württemberg and the Free State of Bavaria came to an agreement during a summit meeting in Ulm to support a German-language university in Budapest which Hungary had been planning, and to take active part in its implementation.[citation needed] Thus the cornerstone for a multinational community project was laid. The then-planned expansion of the European Union was the tone-setting impulse; a contribution to the integration process of the Central European area into the European Union was made which continues to this day.[citation needed]

Founded in the same year by Hungary, the “Public Foundation for the German Language University in Budapest” served as agent. In June 2001, AUB received state recognition by the Hungarian Parliament. Just one year thereafter, the “Andrássy Gyula German-Language University in Budapest” (Andrássy University Budapest – AUB) initiated its teaching programme.[citation needed]

With the name “Andrássy Gyula German-Language University in Budapest“, the founders placed the institution and its future role in the historic traditional lineage of Central Europe. Its namesake, Count Gyula Andrássy (1823-1890), was an active participant of the revolution of 1848/49, from 1867 to 1871 Hungarian prime minister and finally, until his resignation in 1879, foreign minister of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. He was an involved proponent of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, which was bound into the foundation of the Dual Monarchy. He was committed to the promotion of understanding among the nations, and through his extraordinary endeavours for the close cooperation of the Central European states, he is known as one of the most prominent diplomats of the 19th century.[1]

AUB was the first university outside of Germany to be accredited according to German rules and criteria. With its quality assurance system certified by the evalag evaluation agency from Baden-Württemberg, the university guarantees the best study and teaching conditions.[2] It was the fifth in Hungary to be accepted into the excellence program of Hungarian colleges, thus earning the title “University of National Excellence”.[3]
