From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brussels summit
Host countryBelgium
Dates29 and 30 May 1989

The May 1989 NATO summit was a summit held for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The summit was held in Brussels, Belgium. This summit was the ninth NATO summit to bring world leaders from NATO together, which marked the 40th anniversary of the formation of NATO.

Background and discussion

Due to the Cold War, Europe had been divided, the main goal was to reunite the countries. Members of NATO encouraged cooperation in order to make a better future for the alliance.[1] There were talks to improve the relationship between East and West Germany. In the declaration it is stated that peace must be worked for, not taken for granted. The Soviet Union would dissolve just two and a half years later.[2]
