The list of states and union territories of the Republic of India by area is ordered from largest to smallest according to the census of 2011. India consists of 28 states and 8 union territories, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi with Rajasthan being largest in land area.[1][2][3]

In August 2019, the Indian Parliament passed a resolution to divide the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh, which came into action on 31 October 2019.[7]

This includes 78,114 km2 of area in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan under Pakistani administration, 5,180 km2 of area in Shaksgam Valley ceded to China by Pakistan and 37,555 km2 of area in Aksai Chin under Chinese administration totalling to 120,849 km2.[6]
- The Indian government lists the total area as 3,287,263 km2 (1,269,219 sq mi) and the total land area as 3,060,500 km2 (1,181,700 sq mi); the United Nations lists the total area as 3,166,414 km2 (1,222,559 sq mi) and total land area as 2,973,190 km2 (1,147,960 sq mi). (Library of Congress 2004).
