Summary

Description
The scene depicts a feat of arms from the battle of Waterloo (1815). It shows the Southern Dutch artillery battery under the command of Captain Carel Frederik Krahmer de Bichin alongside the British artillery position trying to bring its battery into position in difficult terrain to bring the oncoming French Guard (in the background on the right) under fire. However, the artillery did not work well, partly caused by the muddy field. After the battle, Krahmer de Birchin received the MWO 4th class for his performance. That moment was captured by Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht, the painter of the military genre par excellence whose work is characterised by faithful reproduction without embellishment or romanticism. It is one of his best-known and best paintings. It shows seven gunners led by Krahmer de Birchin (seated on horseback) carrying a six-pounder across terrain soaked by rain from the previous day and night. At the front left is an ammunition caisson, which has taken a hit, slanting against the ground. In front of it lies a fallen artilleryman. Top left, in the background, is a British army unit. - The Krahmer de Bichin battery at the battle of Waterloo in 1815, around 1912 Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht (1858-1933)
