Maj.-Gen. David Stewart of Garth (1772–1829), veteran of the 42nd (Black Watch) Regiment of Foot, author of Sketches of the Character, Manner and Present State of the Highlands of Scotland (1822); instrumental in establishing the modern system Scottish clan tartan, as a co-founder of the Highland Society of London and of the Celtic Society of Edinburgh, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland; and appointed Governor of Saint Lucia in 1829, where he died of a fever. Painting is oil on canvas, H 57 cm × W 40 cm; c. 1820 (exhibited 1832), by James Montgomery Scrymgeour (1793–1856)
