Summary

Description
Nagarjunakonda is an archaeological site near Andhra Pradesh Telangana border. It can be reached by late morning boat services from either state's departure points.
  • Originally connected to the mainland, it is now an island surrounded by Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir waters created by damming the Krishna River.
  • The site contains Buddhist vihara and stupa with inscriptions. These are dated to the 1st to the 3rd century CE.
  • It is a large site, and once included an ancient Mahayana tradition Buddhist school that was active through the 4th-century. The famed Nagarjuna taught here.
  • An archaeological museum is the highlight here, preserving the statues, carvings, and inscriptions in Sanskrit and Prakrit.
